An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.

One account, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the odds had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in betting activity right before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on recently would prevent public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

The industry were examined under the last presidential term. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
