Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
