Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Spectators
The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward fans during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.
Recent Issues and Public Spotlight
The incident comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a central subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in developing the Dallas franchise into the globe’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its recent championship drought.
