Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to challenge certain calls made by the official, following the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
